I spent last weekend in Phoenix and went to games on Friday, Saturday (in Maryvale) and Sunday. I met my friends Lisa and Louise from the Sacramento area who are River Cats season ticket holders. It was much too short a trip.
The A’s lost the first two games. Unfortunately, Friday night Trevor Cahill and the probable A’s opening-day starting lineup ran into a buzz saw, having to face the Padres’ Jake Peavy who was lights out. Didn’t resemble the same guy who looked bad in the World Baseball Classic. The only bright spots were back-to-back solo homes runs by Nomar Garciaparra and Jack Cust in the 8th inning, the A’s only runs. Final score: 5-2.
Saturday’s game was a little better: theA’s lost 4-2 to the Brewers in Maryvale. Dana Eveland gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st, after Jack Hannahan drove in a run in the top of the inning. In the 3rd, Eveland gave up a 3-run homer to the shortstop Hardy, putting the A’s in the hole 4-1. After that, Eveland settled down and pitched 4 scoreless innings. The other bright spot was Sean Doolittle’s ninth inning solo homer. The Brewer’s starter, Jeff Suppan pitched 7 innings and gave up 6 hits and 1 run.
Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies was better, even though Sean Gallagher gave up a run in the first inning. Former Athletic Greg Smith had a rough go of it against his former team, giving up 5 runs in the 2nd inning. The Rockies battled back and took the lead 6-5 in the 4th inning. Neither team scored until the bottom of the 9th inning, when Chris Denorfia hit a walk-off home run with Suzuki on board, pulling victory from the jaws of defeat. More about Sunday’s game tomorrow.
It was a quick trip but lots of fun and great weather in the high-60’s and low 70’s. Dinner at Houston’s and My Big Fat Greek Restaurant with my friends was great fun and VERY filling.
Tomorrow: Speed Guns, Testosterone and a Snafu
